Custom wheel alignment rig

Date

May 2025

This is a project I did for my Vehicle Dynamics course where I designed and fabricated an alignment tool along with a written alignment procedure for my schools FSAE electric team. My tool and procedure enabled the club to accurately adjust the toe, camber, and castor of the car with a repeatable accuracy of (+/-) 0.1 degrees. Since part tolerances in the car can create unavoidable defects, adjustment systems are used to make sure that the wheels can be fine tuned to the proper setup. My tool mounts to the rim of the wheel and holds a 3' bar parallel to the wheels surface to measure the wheel angle relative to the car's center line. Since the bar has a deflection of <0.01", the setup can provide repeatable measurements down to +/- 0.03 deg of accuracy which fits the designed goal. Using my tool, the club gave their 2025 car a proper alignment and continues to use it to document testing setup.
