Custom wheel alignment rig
Date
May 2025
This is a project I did for my Vehicle Dynamics course where I designed and fabricated an alignment tool along with a written alignment procedure for my schools FSAE electric team. My tool and procedure enabled the club to accurately adjust the toe, camber, and castor of the car with a repeatable accuracy of (+/-) 0.06 degrees. This project taught me how involved a wheel alignment can be and how part tolerances can create unavoidable defects which must be worked around through adjustable systems. From start to finish without a dedicated 3D or CCD imaging wheel alignment machine, a professional wheel alignment can take up to 6 hours with the amount of measuring, adjusting, and remeasuring that needs to be done; every time toe is adjusted, camber is changed too and vise-versa so adjustments need to constantly be double checked until the adjustments finally converge on the desired setup.
